About the Books

An over arching theme within my books concerns providing parents and young people with information often possessed by teachers, therapists, lawyers and other professionals. Thereby, empower and enable the monitoring, intervention and questioning of professional support – or its absence.

Books are not designed to replace professional intervention but instead enhance and where necessary encourage it.

CONCRETE AND STRAIGHT FORWARD

Concrete as opposed to theoretical information is presented in a straight forward manor. Text is minimised using bullet points wherever possible.

Visuals are incorporated throughout to provide variety and interest and, because I’m not a psychologist although wanting to address the point that there is much more to life than what often seems negative and all consuming I’ve incorporated popular and often famous poems.

CURRICULUM ACCESS

Yes, curriculum access is covered extensively and even how to challenge it. However, my over all concern is not the passing of exams but instead the teaching of independence and employability. Consequently, you will cover for example, communication during preschool years, social communication and life skills more generally. There are books covering cooking, independent travel and crucially employment too.

CATEGORIES

Books can be placed under five headings:

EMPLOYMENT AND EMPLOYABILITY

Information here will enable a learner to develop standard and creative techniques to find and sustain employment. Content is set out is a straight forward manner for someone for example visual impaired or with autism.

EDUCATION

When trying to address unmet education and training need many find they cannot draw upon the same information and resources as professionals. Consequently, to help address this, the first two titles will arm you for school and local authority meetings, mediation and arbitration hearings.

The third book is specifically designed for teaching assistants to better support disabled, particularly visually impaired, learners.

LIFE SKILLS

These will enable you to plan, organise and deliver independent living skills programmes at home. Underdeveloped expertise in these areas can undermine physical and social development along with confidence, self-esteem and quality of life generally.

HOBBIES AND INTERESTS

Cooking, gardening and the environment are extremely popular with young people today. These topics are covered extensively in accessible formats here. They will not only make excellent presents but also encourage independence too.

PRE-SCHOOL YEARS AND BEYOND

You will cover here the underpinning reasons why problems in development may arise during pre-school years. They offer practical strategies to address need using visual impairment as the primary disability.

All three have a strong emphasis on home education during this time; that is, not replace statutory services but instead augment what should be offered.

To encourage the vital area of communication along with physical development each one is crammed full of nursery rhymes, action songs and bed time stories.
